Rapid wins coachbuilder’s claim for compensation

Robert Gilliam was working at a coach building factory, as a bus chassis was being delivered. He was assisting as the chassis was manoeuvred into place by crane, when part of the carrying frame – a 15 foot steel beam – rolled away onto his foot. Robert suffered a toe fracture which took three months to mend. Robert said: “The beam weighed a ton. I guess I was lucky not to have lost my whole foot, but I managed to get away with just a broken toe.” Rapid Solicitors took up his claim for compensation and won substantial damages for their client’s injury. A spokesman for Rapid said: “In a case like this, we look at whether or not the employer has issued appropriate protective clothing. Suitable protective footwear would have prevented our client’s crush injury. He was a couple of inches away from losing all five toes. It was a straightforward to establish liability, but we had to fight to obtain an increased compensation award from his original offer, which we considered to be far too low.” Mr Gilliam said: “Rapid Solicitors were really good. The case was settled quickly and I didn’t even have to go to Court. I think now, the firm will be issuing proper work boots to the staff.”
