Rapid wins compensation for mum’s failed sterilisation

Mother of three Catherine Cooper, 25, decided that her family was complete and booked into an NHS hospital for a sterilisation procedure. Less than a year later, she found that she was pregnant again, but decided to keep the child, a daughter. Mrs Cooper said: “Obviously it was a shock. I had to have another operation after the birth and I had no real choice but to keep the baby. The situation my husband and I were in at the time meant that we had to move house and we’ve really struggled to cope financially. I love kids but we’d made a firm decision not to have any more. We can’t thank Rapid Solicitors enough for winning our case. It’s a substantial settlement and eases the worry.” A spokesman for Rapid said: “The indication was that the failed sterilisation was a technical operative failure, because the pregnancy was so soon after the operation. Mrs Cooper underwent a further operation after the birth, where it was confirmed that Filshie clips had been incorrectly placed on both sides of her fallopian tubes, which were meant to tie them off. We were able to persuade the Defendants to settle quickly, to avoid further unnecessary costs to the NHS. The key to winning this kind of case is to employ the services of the best medical experts to examine and assess the work of fellow healthcare professionals, in often complex cases.”
